The Bonus Stuff Index

To the right is the Index for all the Bonus Stuff... and when I can I will add more free stuff. We all love free stuff. I do. But along with this is also more information, like who I am besides the Captain - and who were the crew.

Look at the Page Index here and then scroll down a tad and click on that page number. Kinda like looking up a page number in a book and then flipping to that page. Then kick back and enjoy meeting some people and learning some things.

And then of course, make sure to grab your free images for a 2011 Desktop Wallpaper Calendar.

So, why Alaska and how did this all start?

Well, in 1992 I went to work at Glacier Bay National Park's Lodge as a bartender. I was originally from Texas. I had recently moved to Seattle and this was a chance, for me, to continue north. Far north. And Alaska was sounding like a great place to go after a taste of the Washington area.

My stay in Alaska may have been great, but it was too brief. Believe it or not though, at one point while working there, I traded a six pack of beer for 3 days at Pt Adolphus with a kayak. Wow. Now that was a barter.

Having to return to Seattle for the winter, I wished I could have found a way to stay in Alaska, so I had to set forth a plan to get back. As I was reading a lot of John Muir's work at the time, and how he and a few others canoed to Glacier Bay, I thought why not kayak his route. Of course, I didn't have a kayak nor much experience but after all - what are adventures built from... experience along the way!

I spent all of 1993 raising $14,000 in sponsorship to go to Alaska and actually kayak what I believed was John Muir's route. And I guess if there are 15 minutes of fame, this was part of mine, as the Seattle Times newspaper picked up the story; as well as a few magazines, tv programs, and radio stations. And off I went...

Still today, I remember paddling each day over 5 months to eventually accomplish paddling some 1000 miles alone. I lived on the shorelines, in a tent, usually wet, cold, and tired. I can still remember the 35 day stretch I had no human contact. And the storms that held me up or damn near killed me. And that dehydrated food. That's a taste you won't soon forget. Albeit nurishment, after five months of only 8 varietys, one does tend to get bored and tired with their food. And I did.

Finally a day came whereas I was suppose to continue into Sept and Oct and maybe even Nov as I kept paddling stroke by stroke my way down to Seattle. But after five months and a thousand miles and completing what I had intended, I stopped. One of the hardest decisions I've made in life.

So eventually with that haunting decision, I wanted yet again to go back. To explore. To kayak this time a new route for me, and to visit the outside of the Inside Passage, thru Sitka and the outside of Baranof and Chichagof Islands. Now there I thought was another adventure.

Back to my old maps, Gazatteere, and charts to plot a new course; I searched the internet for any information and especially images of this area I could find. Problem was... and still is... there's just not many images to show or see. And then it hit me, the AHA moment. Why can't I go up there and circumnavigate all of SE Alaska and create an interactive map. Why that should keep me busy and take years. Boy, has it.

Fast forward to 2007 and a fair sum of money and a chance to live out a dream. I had inherited some property and elected to sell my portion and use the funds to take off to Alaska and kayak what I had hoped would be every bloody inch. We do seem to dream big when there's a fair sum of money at hand.

In 2007, I found my first expedition helper and we were to kayak around 1,100 miles that year. Oh, but someone forgot to mention the record snow from that winter and how hard it would make the start. Marianna decided to stop and go back home to her boyfriend afer a month while I continued, solo. After too many very close bear encounters, I too stopped and decided it was time to buy a boat and get off shore and somewhere safe. Well, relatively. So I became the Captain of the Lenora Faith. Unfortunately, not my favorite boat. So I finished off that year the best I could, and the next, bought yet another boat, my baby... the SeaQuil. So much for a fair sum of money. Gone.

Where dreams become reality

Over the next three years, for 2008 through 2010, the SeaQuil and I would start off each season with a crew member and eventually end a season alone, working the waters single handed. I can't say I ever blame any crew for not staying a whole season. After all, this is my passion coupled with my goals and dreams and when two are on a small boat for extended times, well... sometimes one will part. And so it was.

But I went back year after year, facing each a new set of problems at the beginning and alway during the expedition. I planned and worked and gained knowledge and finally looked forward in truth to single handing my boat and being out there totally alone. Yea, I can't count how many bear encounters, tents lost, equipment failures, sprained this or busted that and yet I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. Till the dreaded day came when one would finally say enough, this year is over. Quit.

And now the adventure is over. I have probably seen more Alaska than even a lot of the residences in Alaska. Over 6,000 miles of shorelines in four years or over 450 days. Working fevourishly to complete this product so that you may follow along, I am closing in on setting a day and time that it should be ready for market, but I do expect more delays, as life tends to do just that. But bear with me. I am working hard on all this.

Keep checking back and I promise to work non-stop and get this product to market so that you may finally see what I fell in love with, SE Alaska - the land and the people.

Sincerely, your Captain... Randal.
